Posted by crash on Jun-05-00 at 11:07 AM ........................................................ Well after much hesitation and worrying, Sunday morning I handed the keys to my boat to my wife , gave her a kiss and told her to have fun. For three long and sometimes fustrating years She's been learning and studying. Last week she got enough nerve to ask me for the keys, that she was going fishing with a girlfriend that was moving away soon. WOW, talk about mixed emotions, You got to remeMber it wasn't long ago that I was posting for help to get my wife to understand why I go fishing, Now its her heading to the lake . We spent the days preceeding, going over lake maps, my old notes, Drawing maps, Diagrams, how to ID your catch, Laws, Fish Handeling. You name it , she got a "crash" course in it. So I took the kids for the day, I never relized how long a day can go. I see why she's so frazzeled sometimes when I get back late from the lake. I was a little worried when they called asking "whitch boat is it agian?" And then quickly hung up muttering something about there goes my rod!!?. The hours just kept going slower and slower. Visions of stumps sticking out nicely between the seats, busted rods, and stripped gears kept dancing in my head. 10:30 at night I hear the car pull in and I am all ready for the "Well you'll get them next time hon", "this is what you did wrong", "Don't worry, it won't be too expensive to fix" talk. Well I had to go and unload the cooler , BECAUSE IS WAS TOO HEAVY WITH FISH FOR THEM TO LIFT IT OUT OF THE CAR!!! Walleyes, Crappies, and Perch all found their way onto their lines and into the cooler. All caught on yellow twister tails. I was up untill midnight cleaning fish . So be careful what you wish for, She's already planning her next trip, Hope she takes me!! WOO HOO!! I MARRIED A FISHN BABE AFTER ALL!! ======================================================== Reply Number 1 - "RE: " Posted by Juls_WI on Jun-05-00 at 11:14 AM ........................................................ Posted by Gunga Din on Jun-05-00 at 12:01 PM ........................................................ LOL! I just helped my wife for the last time back the trailer into the water. Next time I'm dropping her off at the dock. Maybe in a few years she'll be asking for the keys to the boat! Makes me wonder how many more years before she starts fileting her own catch? ======================================================== Reply Number 4 - "RE: Wifes first time out" Posted by Ness on Jun-05-00 at 12:24 PM ........................................................ I think I'm doing something wrong here... I've been cleaning my own catch for years!!!!!!! Go fishing without him, bring home a cooler of fish, and he'll clean them?????? What fairy tale did this guy star in??????? You catch them, hon, you clean them!!!!!!!!!!! And the keys to the boat are easy to get, it's the keys to the towing vehicle that he won't give up!!!!!!! He doesn't worry about me handling the boat in the water, it's me getting it to the water that scares him ======================================================== Reply Number 3 - "RE: " Posted by Walleye Warrior on Jun-05-00 at 12:24 PM ........................................................ GREAT STORY Love this site! ======================================================== Reply Number 5 - "RE: Know how you feel" Posted by jumbojim on Jun-05-00 at 12:40 PM ........................................................ LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-00 AT 12:44 PM (CST) I met a girl 3 years ago. She liked to fish a bit she said . So our first date was on the Peshtigo River fishing for the day with tube jigs. I showed her how to plop them along the shores and near trees and we cleaned up on huge Small mouth .Almost every weekend after that we fished together and she got good enough to help me with guiding.Three years later she has her 3rd boat and is fishing the MWC. She has earned where she is by going and learning and prefishing by her self. She is like the rest of us sleeps in her truck when she needs too. She drove two weekends by herself 900 miles away at Big Stone to prefish the tourney there and searched the lake alone with the advice people had given her from the bait shop and a few other places. All that worked paid off she and her partner who came up on caught 4 fish. While it might not be first place it showed one woman could find fish, fishing an area three weekends by herself in her spots and put her and her teamate on fish. I have had mixed feelings at times having her go at it alone but I am proud and admire the effort she pushes herself to be a true contender. I have fished with many pros and many good fisherman. I have to say she is one of few people that has many natural and learned abuilities to be the angler she has become. I go to her for her opinions on fishing. Just thought I'd like to share that. Her name is Jenn and goes by Jenn_Wi. Can't wait to see her on the PWT she has the ability and is the real deal. jumbo ======================================================== Reply Number 6 - "RE: " Posted by jumbojim on Jun-05-00 at 04:06 PM ........................................................ did not mean to embarass you jen ======================================================== Reply Number 7 - "Wifes first Tournament" Posted by Glen Bunnell on Jun-05-00 at 07:29 PM ........................................................ Posted by iamwalleye1 on Sep-03-00 at 11:17 AM ........................................................ We had a "great-week" in one word. The weather was not the nicest but that is expected this time of year. The walleye fishing was the best I have ever seen in my 9 years of visiting the winnipeg river. We had a tough time getting fish under 18". The fishing expedition began on Saturday for when we arrived it was hot and no wind. We caught around 40 fish for the half a day. The biggest was 29.5". On Sunday, weather was still stable and caught over 150 walleye using spinners - again the same - tough catching fish under the 18". Largest that day, 31.5". Then the weather decided to make that "big" change and the winds picked up and the temperature dropped. Lightening, thunder, winds and temps in the mid 50's. Still caught really nice fish, but the frantic fish frenzy began to slow. Tuesday started to use the downriggers to depths of 45' and trolling cranks. Lots of 18" to 20", actually became boring catching the same fish over and over. Biggest that day - 25". Remainder of the week, found new fishing "hot" spots and used spinners, jigs and lindys. Averaged 50 fish per day with the average size of 19". The northern fishing was slow due to water temperature being too warm and the weeds were still in bloom. Caught a couple of 14lbs and a lot of little ones. Muskies really did not fish for because the Walleyes were so heavy. Had a nice one on and lost him, raised one "dandy". Returning on September 15th for another adventure in the "Great North"! Thanks. Dry lake was actually pretty bad this year. The water dropped, got stagnant, and smelled like an open sewer most of the year. The fishing was bad, I caught about 3 walleyes in 8 or so trips there, but they were all good sized. I didn't make any trips there in april or may, so I might have missed the good spring bite, but it sure was bad there this summer. There should be a good perch bite when you get to Waubay, but most of the perch are small. I know that there's walleyes being caught there, but haven't heard much in the last week or so from there. Good luck on Waubay. I got out today , and i got to see for myself first hand what a real good day on the water, and a good day fishing is. for once it came together. it wasnt yesterday, or maybe tomorrow, it happened today, and by golly i was there for once. we had a limit catch of walleye(30), it took us about 4 hours and 15 minutes, and what a pretty sight it is to catch that many eyes , and have that many real good fish too. i do know that we will have some fish for the walleye central fry now. I have some put aside for the freezer for the fry then. we did have some fish-ohio eyes, the largest ones were 31 1/4, 31, 30, 30, 29, 29,and 3 that were a little over 28. the rest were very nice fish too. i will have some pictures when they are developed. we were almost straight out of vermilion, but we started close to the 27/27 lines and went n/east from there. we trolled with the wind and just kept going as long as we were catching fish. we circled one time, then got our last 4 fish, and came in. it was choppy, with some 3 and a few 4 foot waves. most fish were caught on stinger spoons, in the colors of monkey puke, shrimp, confusion, andmayfly. the fish were about 4 foot off the bottom. a few were taken on reefrunners(4) at 150 back. good luck and good fishin. CJ, i believe that it will be the new world record, but correct me if i'm wrong, the score is considered a green score. that means that it has to age a given period of time(not sure how long). there is quite a bit of shrinkage when the bones dry out(mainly effects the spread), but i suspect it will be the new boone and crocket world record after that period of time has expired. "go outside and play" sib ======================================================== Reply Number 2 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by Chad on Jan-09-01 at 10:09 AM ........................................................ I just saw a report in the paper that said that it may not qualify for Boon & Crocket. They are waiting to test the bow used. Boone & Crocket has a rule that the let off can not exceed 65% in order for a buck to qualify for the book. If the bow used was a 70% let off then no new "OFFICIAL" record. Kind of like a line test record. Either way one heck of a buck!!! ======================================================== Reply Number 4 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by Fish-on on Jan-09-01 at 10:14 AM ........................................................ Boone & Crockett has no restrictions on bow let-off. You can enter deer killed with any legal weapon in B&C, even road kills and found-dead deer. You may be thinking of the Pope and Young Club, a group which keeps records for bow-killed deer and which has restrictions on let-off. ======================================================== Reply Number 5 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by CJHughes on Jan-09-01 at 10:41 AM ........................................................ Yes there is a drying period for scoreing,I don't remeber when it was shot, but it is 60 days after that.I didn't hear or read anything about the bow and 70% let off, maybe for pope and young but I don't see how for B&C.The rumors are flying around here, the property next to where he shot it was feeding the deer corn with steriods in it,this is also the property where it expired, they also want some money from the guy who shot it.That is just a few I heard this morning at the coffee shop.If it is true, that means the #1 and #2 buck in the world came from Ohio. ======================================================== Reply Number 3 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by Fish-on on Jan-09-01 at 10:11 AM ........................................................ The required drying time is over and the buck has been officially scored. This is not a green score. Neither is it a World Record. There are two non-typical bucks larger in the record books, but the buck in question is the largest non-typical ever bagged by a hunter. The other two were not killed by hunters, so this is the largest non-typical ever taken by a hunter. It must be panel scored before it is certified at the next B&C meeting, but that's pretty much a formality. It is a remarkable buck, I've seen several photos of it and it looks surprisingly like the Hole-in-the-horn buck. Lucky guy. ======================================================== Reply Number 6 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by jerry on Jan-09-01 at 10:54 AM ........................................................ A huge buck and one any hunter would be proud of, yes. But a new world record, no. It is a record for the biggest non-typical ever killed by a hunter but two non-typicals have been measured that are bigger. they are the Missouri Monarch which was found dead near St. Louis and the Hole-in-the-Horn buck. Both these animals scored more than this buck. I'm not trying to belittle the buck that was killed in 2000. This animal is a once in a lifetime deal. Just wanted to set the record straight. ======================================================== Reply Number 7 - "RE: World Record Buck " Posted by Tim FRick on Jan-09-01 at 11:32 AM ........................................................ here's the paper if anyone is interested! http://www.activedayton.com/partners/ddn/ It's pretty big! Thats a good rig that you were pulling. I think I missed out on a lot of walleyes while trolling because of perch and trout hitting my bouncer. I went most of thesummer with a white blade with a red stripe and 7 small read beads with two hooks and a worm. It was really effective for multi-species. I got a lot of trout and perch, a good amount or walleyes on it and a few wipers. I think I know the exact spot that you are talking about. In the fall when it was really cold and nasty out we were working a hump and a drop off in the open to senac and getting some viscious strikes by some big trout. We purchased a Triton with Digital 225 Optimax late last fall however we only were able to put 3 hours on the boat before things froze up. But i will offer what info we do have, and that is that it will idle down to 450rpm. we didnt try to pull plugs or anything like that during that time, but it was nice to be able to slow the boat down while loading. As for the motor itself it has real nice hole shot and mid-range power band compared to our other boat which is a targa 2000 with 99 225 optimax. I pulled a lot of cranks with it this fall using the pinpoint on the bow to steer and the opti on the back to push. It worked great! The only thing I had to do was to put a set of plugs in around 100 hours and from what I have heard this is the norm with the factory plugs. ======================================================== Reply Number 4 - "RE: Digital Optimax" Posted by Chad on Jan-29-01 at 07:45 AM ........................................................ My parntner runs a 225 digital. We havn't really used the spartgauge much. In rough water we did use the 225 to troll cranks and could get down to 1.5 mpg. It'll depend on the boat but yes, you can get down to 450-500 rpm's. If you have a 9.9 or 15 hp 4 stroke kicker it'll save a little on the gas. It is very important to break your engine in correctly. Do it by the book. Also its important to change your plugs at 100 hours. ======================================================== Reply Number 5 - "RE: Digital Optimax" Posted by Prchjerker on Jan-29-01 at 08:32 AM ........................................................ It can be hard to get a straight answer tho. They love to tap dance, double talk, sidestep and skirt the issue of scroll speed. lowrance prefer the term "chart speed". That's the way they refer to it in their tutorial section. They will say things like "the x15 upgade has made the x15 scroll speed twice as fast as the normal chart speed of the x85". NORMAL speed? ( the x85 has fasttrac) That's like saying a Ford can go twice as fast as Chev. if Chev. is stuck in second gear. Personally.... Brad, Thanks, Cabelas has the MinnKota at $289.00. $398.00 on the CMC. I would shy away from that model made by minnkota. The minnkota I was referring to is the 4500? model, I think thats the right #, but the one you mentioned is the clamp-on which I believe is run by an elec. actuater. I have one similar to that right now, but is not a clamp-on, & I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy! Very slow raising, poor seals, water in the cylinder housing, not a good long term investment. If $ is a big issue for you, I would seriously look at the cmc model 35. It is a sealed hydraulic lift with over 7000# of thrust. I wouldn't be afraid to drill holes in the transom, it may save your kicker from falling to the bottom of the lake. My kicker is also bolted on to the power lift, which they do recommend. The setback is not a problem on most boats, actually gives you a little better boat control. Personally, I think you will be much happier with a cmc, or panther, if you can afford it. Good luck! After my second mercury lift went out and was replaced under warrenty, I got a panther an have never looked back. The panther is sturdy and reliable. I have also heard good things about the cmc. I would not consider the minnkota because is has a lower weight capacity. Do you have a heavy 4 stroke kicker? I do, and also fish some rough water where a clamp on will just not cut it. the Mercury lifts would keep falling down, the jarring from the waves was more than the hydraulic cylinder could take. (kind of like my mercury trim and tilt on my XR6 but that is another subject). Mark ======================================================== Reply Number 7 - "RE: Power Tilt/Trim for kicker" Posted by Doc (wi) on Mar-04-01 at 01:45 PM ........................................................ I have run the Panther and the CMC lift. The CMC lift is in my humble opinion the better of the two units. Range of motion, drive system and the look of the CMC made up my mind to stay with that system. My sponsoring boat dealer rigs a lot of CMC jack plates on V6 motors and they get good ratings from the boat owners and our mechanical staff as does the PT-35. We also rig a lot of Panther lifts for kicker motors and I see lots of guys who are very happy with them also. Ask the mechanic at your local dealer for a straight answer also. It was calm enough we could keep our lines vertical by facing the bow into the wind and using the electric. Beats handling a cold, wet anchor rope, though I'll anchor is necessary. I use a flasher off the back of the boat - just like ice fishing. Use a piece of old car trim & a C-clamp to attach the transducer to the boat or with the newer self leveling transducers, just attach the cord to a tomato stake and stick it out to the side in a rod holder. Pimples and jigging raps. Chrome pimple w/green prism tape was the only lure used Sat.- didn't mark enough fish to experiment. When the waves are up around 3-4 ft, we sometimes drift fish with 2 oz bouncers and harnesses. Big shiner on # 2 front hook, smaller one on # 4 back, char. float w/chrome blade is my favorite. ======================================================== Reply Number 5 - "RE: erie reefs any action yet?" Also you might try a plain pink or chartruese 3/8th oz jighead (no plastic tail) with a big 3" minnow tail hooked .Just fish it by slowly lifting and letting it fall along the bottom.Try to keep the rig three to six inches off the bottom and stay ready bites can be real light....Tight lines.~~Lets break that state walleye record again this spring guys!.......Len ======================================================== Reply Number 9 - "RE: erie reefs any action yet?" Posted by JCarp on Mar-05-01 at 06:46 PM ........................................................ Yes, I was referring to a flasher type sonar. Graphs will work. I agree with Len's comments on lure size and presentation except I pull my lure above any high mark and probably catch well over half my fish 5 to 10 feet off bottom. High fish are almost always active and frequently big. We always start with the largest size jigging raps and pimples and go down 1 size if we work a lot of fish that don't bite. 5 little shiners on the raps and 3 on pimples (replace 1 little shiner with a big one if avail). If we don't catch fish in 15-20 minutes, we move. We stay clear or at least well outside any groups. ======================================================== Reply Number 10 - "RE: erie reefs any action yet?" I go with a large group (15-20 guys) their every two years in August. We go there because they can accomodate large groups like ours. It is at least an hour from Hudson because the road is rough. Last summer 10-15mph for most of the way. You leave your vehicle at a landing and have to boat about 1-2 miles to the resort. The resort is run by the Indian tribe and you are staying on an Indian Reservation. Don't expect them to be really helpful. We paid good money for the bunkhouses and they wouldn't even give us toilet paper for the cabin, and we had to tell them to come and get the garbage a couple of times. To get to Bear narrows would depend on the size of your boat, but I would guess it would be 15 miles. I'm not really sure. The fishing here has been very good here for us. You are right next to Vaughn Lake, and fishing the main lake is also very productive. I personally caught 70-80 walleyes this year in 5 days of fishing (7 over the slot, 10-15 in the slot). We also spend some time fishing northerns. Our group will eat fish every night and bring a limit home, so catching fish is not usually a problem. I thought I'd pass this along to you folks......... Dear God, Why didn't you save the school children in Santana school? Sincerely, A Concerned Student _________________________________________________________________ Dear Concerned Student, I am not allowed in schools. Sincerely, God Let's see, I think it started when Madeline Murray O'Hare complained she didn't want any prayer in our schools. And we said, OK......... Then, someone said you better not read the Bible in school, the Bible that says "thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love thy neighbor as yourself". And we said, OK..... Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. And we said, an expert should know what he is talking about so we won't spank them anymore............... Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity and we surely don't want to be sued. And we accepted their reasoning.............. Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said, that's a grand idea............. Then some wise school board member said since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want, so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. And we said, that's another great idea........... And then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. And we said, doesn't matter what anybody, including the President, does in private as long as we have jobs and the economy is good.......... And then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body. And we said, we have no problem with that.... And someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then stepped further still by making them available on the internet. And we said, everyone's entitled to free speech............. And the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies promoting profanity, violence and illicit sex... And let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder suicide, and satanic themes........ And we said, it's just entertainment and it has no adverse effect and nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead.... Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, and why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, classmates or even themselves. Undoubtedly, if we thought about it long and hard enough, we could figure it out. I'm sure it has a great deal to do with the fact that......... Once depth started to drop, we motored back over to the West side of the lake to begin the drift again. picked up one or two on every pass. There were at least 50 boats doin the same. Caught 8 eyes, all between 15 and 20 inches, also 8 very nice slab crappies (12-15 inchers) and two perch. It was a fun time for only 4 hours of fishin'. steely123 ======================================================== Reply Number 2 - "RE: Pymy Eye Catchers" Posted by Carpetbagger on Apr-16-01 at 03:42 PM ........................................................ I was with that pack fishing Saturday. Caught 4 keepers and returned that many just over 15 inchers. (The warden was checking boats at the launch and I get nervous worrying if those barely legal fish have shrunk.) Fish were scattered across that big shallow bar but the better ones were on the windward drops as often happens when that many boats are hammering them. The key color was chartreuse. But I switched from a jig/minnow to a three way rig with a minnow and later to a half (or smaller) crawler and caught more fish. I used a single hook and a chartreuse/green "floater" bead. This was my best set up Sunday when the wind changed directions and the fishing was slower. Again I trolled for those fish on the upwind side of the breaks. I only boated one keeper before quitting at noon but I had enough action on the "shorts" to make me happy. The point is, it might be time to switch to crawler tactics. Tight lines. ======================================================== Reply Number 4 - "RE: Pymy Eye Catchers" Posted by Pyeyed on Apr-17-01 at 10:26 AM ........................................................ If you are heading west and north, like up highway 71 , through Nestor Falls, you can also get good leeches at Angler Pro Shop in Nestor Falls. Leech supply in Ontario should be better this year at least that is what wholesale suppliers have told us. Good fishing !! ======================================================== Reply Number 3 - "RE: leaches in Ft. Frances" Posted by Stezostedion vitreum man on Apr-20-01 at 11:57 AM ........................................................ jahloaf, Yes, you may purchase leeches by the pound in Fort Francis. However, don't expect the qualilty to be as good as you would receive from a bait dealer here in the States. First of all, when you buy a pound of leeches (at least the bait shops I've bought them from) they have not culled the leeches according to size. When you buy a pound, they are all mixed from very small to a few jumbos(when jumbos are available). Expect to pay more for a pound of leeches in Canada, even with the exchange rate, than in the U.S. (usually about $5.00 USD or more/pound). You may, however, get them in water and air for your trip. I would suggest that you call ahead and order them, if you have a large party, and they will be ready for you when you arrive. Since it is now illegal to bring leeches across the border, what you see, is what you get. A leech fishermen doesn't have many options when it comes to purchasing leeches across the border. Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry. S.v.m ======================================================== Reply Number 4 - "RE: leaches in Ft. I Bought a pound of leeches at Rainy Lake Sports in Fort Frances last August and they cost me $60 a pound. They were suppose to be large, but when we started fishing we noticed that many of them were no bigger than 1" long. Good luck on trying to find decent leeches in Canada. ======================================================== Reply Number 5 - "RE: leaches in Ft. Frances" Posted by Stezostedion vitreum man on Apr-20-01 at 05:59 PM ........................................................ Matt, I also purchased 2 lbs of leechs from Rainy Lake Sports during the second week in August of last year. The price you quoted " 60 a pound " must have been in Canadian dollars, correct? I may be mistaken, but I don't remember them costing that much/pound, please refresh my memory. One thing I haven't forgotten, however, we didn't have one leech in those two pounds over an inch and a half long. The one advantage to the very small leeches, is that you sure get alot of them. Now I realize that larger leeches are harder to come by that late in the season, but that was ridiculous. With gas predicted at $3.00/gal. this summer in the States (the Canadian resort we stayed at last summer was charging $4.50/gal. USD, can you imagine what it will cost this summer?) and leeches at $60.00/lb, I may have to rethink some of my summer fishing activities this year and stay a little closer to home! Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry. I didn't talk to a single fisherman all weekend who said they didn't limit, or could have limited had they wanted to clean all those fish. The average fish being caught is 14 1/2 to 15 1/2 inches. There are a number of 16, 17 and 18 inch fish being caught. The presentation doesn't seem to matter. Jigs, cranks, bouncers and Lindy's are all working.
